How these sales work

Buying government property in Aiken County

South Carolina is a redeemable deed state

South Carolina counties hold delinquent tax sales, usually in the fall, where the buyer's bid is held for a year while the owner may redeem; unredeemed parcels are deeded to the buyer. Property nobody bids on goes to the county's Forfeited Land Commission.

Redemption period
The owner has 12 months from the sale to redeem, paying the delinquent amount plus interest owed to the buyer; the tax deed issues after that year.
Interest or penalty
Interest owed on redemption rises by quarter, commonly 3%, 6%, 9% and 12% of the bid amount, capped at the opening bid.
