OTR publishes the tax sale list several weeks in advance and holds the sale over several days, requiring bidders to pre-register and post a deposit. Bidding is for a premium above the taxes owed, and the premium generally earns no interest. After six months a certificate holder can file a foreclosure action in D.C. Superior Court, a process that often takes a year or more. Confirm the property's class and any exemptions before bidding, since some parcels are withdrawn or redeemed shortly after the sale.

The District sells tax liens. The buyer holds a certificate that earns interest, and title passes only after a court foreclosure.
There is no fixed end date; the owner can redeem until a foreclosure judgment, and the buyer must wait at least six months before filing suit.
The Department of General Services disposes of District vehicles and equipment, frequently through online auction listings, while federal agencies headquartered in the city sell through GSA Auctions.
