How these sales work

Buying government property in Alleghany County

Virginia is a tax deed state

Virginia localities collect delinquent taxes through judicial sales, where a court-appointed special commissioner auctions the property and the circuit court confirms the sale. Buyers receive a deed free of the tax lien.

Redemption period: The owner may redeem any time before the sale is confirmed by the court; after confirmation there is no redemption period.
Interest or penalty: Not applicable — Virginia buyers take a confirmed deed rather than an interest-bearing certificate.
