How these sales work
Buying government property in Hill County
Texas is a redeemable deed state
Texas counties sell tax-foreclosed property on the first Tuesday of the month through the sheriff or constable, and the buyer's deed remains subject to a redemption right with a steep premium. Unsold parcels are 'struck off' and resold later.
- Redemption period
- Owners have two years to redeem homestead and agricultural property and six months for other property, running from the date the deed is recorded.
- Interest or penalty
- Redemption requires paying the buyer a 25% premium in the first year and 50% in the second year for homestead or agricultural property (25% for the six-month period on other property).
Tax sale (deed)
The county sells the property itself to recover unpaid taxes. The minimum bid is usually the delinquent taxes, interest and costs.
