How these sales work

Buying government property in Allamakee County

Iowa is a tax lien state

Iowa county treasurers hold an annual tax sale on the third Monday of June, selling tax sale certificates on delinquent parcels. Bidders compete by offering to buy the smallest undivided share.

Redemption period: Owners commonly have about one year and nine months before the certificate holder can serve a 90-day notice of expiration; redemption ends when that notice period lapses.
Interest or penalty: The certificate earns 2% per month on the amount paid, which is the commonly cited Iowa rate.
