Indiana counties sell tax sale certificates each fall, and Marion and Allen counties are among the larger annual sales. The certificate holder earns a statutory penalty and can petition for a deed after redemption expires.

Redemption period: The owner has one year from the sale to redeem (120 days for certain commissioners' certificate sales), after which the buyer petitions the court for a tax deed.
Interest or penalty: Redemption requires paying the minimum bid plus a 10% penalty if redeemed within six months or 15% after, plus interest on any surplus bid.
